![]() ![]() As mentioned, the bonus/perks are not carried over. ![]() I tested it on a new save and was able to load up an outfit that I did not have yet. I did some digging yesterday and was able to find the clothing slots and style slots. Not exactly what I want when I'm sitting alone on the couch completely sober.Wed 2:14 amFrom what I tried, you can actually type in the value of a specific outfit, then go to the wardrobe and exit it again, it will change to your desire outfit. It was still fun, but fun in that way that my friends and I used to boot up a GTA game and go drunk driving around Liberty City after a few too many tasty beverages. You know that scene from Disney's Up in which Carl Frederickson and Charles Muntz halt their old man fight to watch Russel slowly slide across the windshield of the zeppelin? I imagine that's what it must have been like for all the NPC onlookers watching us repeatedly fall off the motorcycle after dinging into the same street sign at 10 MPH. Jeffrey and I slammed into every obstacle in our vicinity over and over, even when I was taking it slow, flying off the bike each time and needing to repeatedly regroup while our target gleefully zoomed around the city. But on mobile, it was a whole other level of frustrating. This one gave me trouble back on the PS2, as my target was flying through alleyway corners and banking into perfect right-angle turns up ramps with precision. Loc from prison and immediately get thrown into a high-speed pursuit on a motorcycle. This really came to a head in the mission in which you pick up O.G. Not on this playthrough, though! Using my left thumb to control the steering wheel and a series of on-screen 'buttons' with my right, to control the accelerator, brakes, drift, and so on, it took a lot of patience to stop careening into any pedestrian, fence, or lamp post that had the misfortune of being in a 90-degree cone around the front of my car. I got pretty heavily invested in San Andreas' story back in the day, and since the early game involved borrowing cars from my friends in the Grove Street crew, I got pretty good at not running into anything. But if, like me, you're not someone who takes mobile gaming seriously enough to tack on peripherals, there's still some fun to be found in the new platform.Īt the forefront of everything is driving, which is kind of a nightmare. I don't have any fancy add-ons that clip onto my Samsung Galaxy and turn it into a functional controller, so if you've got one, you may have a more traditional GTA experience. ![]() Well, my answer is: it's kind of a mixed bag. speaking of which.Īll of that is well and good, but it still begs the question of how well this game plays on a cell phone. There's nothing that has happened so far during my playthrough - which is still in progress, since it's a pretty long game, and I'm a completionist - that made me notice the world flying by me any slower as I've been zooming through SoCal on a motorcycle, or cheap shots from enemies due to the on-screen action or my button inputs not catching up with the game, and I haven't had a single crash either. I wouldn't even have known it was the definitive edition if it hadn't been staring back at me from the icon.Īs far as stability, I didn't run into any problems with that either (as far as I could tell, at least). In a weird twist of fate, shrinking everything down to fit on a phone screen makes for a kind of automatic graphical downgrade, and even more oddly, that's just what this game needed. Granted, that's probably because I'm playing on a tiny phone screen instead of lounging back in my recliner in front of the television with a controller in my hands. Do the characters still look cartoony and the environments a little too crisp and clean? Not really. That's a long way to fall for games that all averaged in the mid-90s on initial release, but it seems like it was deserved, because complaints from professional critics and player alike were across the board, from cartoonish characters and environments that looked too clean to tell GTAs gritty tales to an imbalance of quality in the textural upgrades from lagging framerates to outright crashes.Īnd you know what? All the gripes I listed above don't really apply here. Review aggregate site Metacritic has the Xbox Series X version sitting at a 56/100 as the top combined score across platforms, with the Switch version skimming the bottom at a 46/100. Consisting of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, all packaged together, these were games that really opened my eyes to what an open world could be on their original release back on the PlayStation 2, so it was beyond disappointing to see them almost universally panned when the big re-release came in 2021.īut panned they were, and harshly at that. When it comes to the history of remastered releases, few games have fallen shorter than the Grand Theft Auto Definitive Edition trilogy. ![]()
